The Full Story

My name is Skyler, and this website was created as part of my Girl Scout Gold Award project. I joined Girl Scouts in my first week of kindergarten and have learned many life skills through the Girl Scout Program. Leadership, service, and teamwork are among them.
Just like so many of my friends, cancer has played a large role in my life. When I was eleven, my grandma was diagnosed with cancer and passed away a year and a half later. Six months later in 2021, my mom was diagnosed with colon cancer and has been battling ever since. Having cancer in my family has helped me to see how much the disease affects the patient but even more how it affects their friends and family.
When it was time to consider my Gold Award project, I sought a project that felt both personal and beneficial to my community. One night, my family was discussing the ways people in our lives have reacted to my mother’s diagnosis. So many people want to help our family in some way but are unsure of how or what to do. Friends want to support my mom but are also unsure of her capabilities. I realized that a resource for clear and compassionate help in how to figure out the new world where your loved one has cancer was needed. After sharing the idea with my Girl Scout Leader and my personal pediatrician's office, they both encouraged me to move forward, and I began developing this website/guide.
I hope that this website will provide a comprehensive and accessible resource for those of us who are supporting loved ones with cancer, acknowledging the emotional effect that cancer has on caregivers and family members. I have gathered information, support tools, and resources in one place, and I hope that you find it helpful during an overwhelming time. I know that cancer is hard, but no one should have to go through it alone.
I am grateful to my Girl Scout leaders, medical professionals, family, and support system for their guidance, encouragement, and belief in this project. Their support made this work possible
